Coral Care Resources

Quick Tips for Success

✔ Acclimate slowly – drip method recommended

✔ Dip before introducing (Revive, CoralRX, etc.). Do not dip anemones

✔ Stable parameters = happy corals

✔ Research your coral’s placement needs (flow, light)

✔ Start low on the rockwork and move up as needed

✔ Feed corals sparingly unless species-specific

Parameter Ideal Range

Salinity- 1.024–1.026 SG

Temperature- 76–79°F

Alkalinity- 8–9.5 dKH

Calcium- 420–450 ppm

Magnesium- 1200–1400 ppm

Nitrate- 2–10 ppm

Phosphate- 0.01–0.05 ppm

SPS (Small Polyp Stony) Care

Examples: Acropora, Montipora, Birdsnest

Light: High (PAR 250–450)

Flow: Strong & random

Placement: Upper tank zones

Stability: Sensitive to water quality swings; stability is critical (alk swings= coral drama)

Feeding: Optional; benefits from broadcast feeding

Tips: Best for experienced reefers. Needs mature tank

LPS (Large Polyp Stony) Care

Examples: Torch, Hammer, Acan, Candy Cane

Light: Moderate to high (PAR 80-200)

Flow: Low to moderate, indirect

Placement: Mid to lower tank zones

Feeding: Yes! Target feeding boosts growth. Feed meaty foods 1-2 times/week

Tips: Leave room for sweeper tentacles (they can pack a punch to nearby neighbors)

Zoanthids & Palythoas Care

Examples: Rastas, Eagle Eyes, Sunny Ds

Light: Low to moderate (PAR 50–150)

Flow: Moderate, indirect flow- enough to keep detritus from settling

Placement: Flexible; easy to propagate

Feeding: Optional; grows well with good light and nutrients

Tips: Handle with care – some contain palytoxin. Wear gloves and eye protection

Mushroom Care

Examples: Ricordea, Bounce, Discosoma

Light: Low to moderate (PAR 30–100)

Flow: Low

Placement: Shaded or lower tank areas

Feeding: Occasionally

Tips: Great for beginners; will multiply like salty rabbits.

Soft Coral Care

Examples: Kenya Tree, Xenia, Toadstool, Clove Polyps

Light: Moderate (PAR 75-200)

Flow: Moderate to strong, swaying motion

Placement: Middle to lower zones

Feeding: Not required; photosynthetic

Tips: Hardy and fast-growing. Can take over, so frag if needed!

Anemone Care

Examples: Bubble Tip, Rock Flower, Long Tentacle

Light: Moderate to High (PAR 150–300)

Flow: Moderate to strong

Placement: Let them choose—they will walk until they find their spot

Feeding: Weekly small meaty foods (mysis, silversides)

Tips: Needs a stable, mature tank. May wander — use guards on intakes!
